Travis is
the
eldest of the Oberg boys by six years. He is a talented
singer/songwriter, whose fingers produce delicious melodies on his
guitar. He started playing and writing at a very young age. Songs and singing have always been a part of his life. His
music has an intimate, folkie-americana style. It presents an honest
viewpoint on the importance of remembering where you've been, looking
ahead to where you are going and the decisions that we make on this
journey. His songs deal with life and loss, relationships, redemption,
and offer hope in this sometimes uncertain and difficult day we live
in.
Being
a Christian and a songwriter has proved to be a challenge for Travis. But not
to the extent that he has had to compromise or ignore his honest and
utter allegiance to Christ. For him everything is anchored in his relationship
with Christ. With that being developed, he is able to sing out freely
about truth, love, and even doubts and difficulty. He knows that Christ
being such a key part in his life will come through his songs, no
matter what the song is about. It can be hard to keep the message
clear, and keep the musical excellence; merging these takes time and a
lot of care to develop. But, that's what makes a song so meaningful.
It's the story that it brings with it and how God is able to work
through that. Music for Travis has always been about the ministry it
allows; the strange and powerful way it can connect with people from
every walk of life.
A
myriad of things have shaped Travis into the artist he is today. These
include: love, loss, pain, and perfection. Other artists have
influenced him as well. Some include: Paul
Simon, Radiohead, Midnight Oil, James Taylor, Bjork, Pearl Jam,
Jim Croce, Muse, Coldplay, Counting Crows, Ani Difranco, Derek Webb,
Lyle Lovett, Violet Burning, Mason Jennings, Coltrane, Davis and the
Jazz masters... It has been said that if you took the sounds of Ani
Difrance, James Taylor, Davis Gray, Jack Johnson and Johnny Cash and
stuck them in a blender, out would come the cool, refreshing, intimate,
and raw sounds of Travis Oberg.
